Yeast Infections in Dogs - Overview

good dog food for yeast infections

Dogs specifically suffer from yeast dermatitis - an inflammatory skin condition that occurs when Malassezia experiences overgrowth. This fungal species is relatively regular in dogs, especially in the ears, skin folds, between paw pads, and other hot spots in the dog's body, which encourage yeast to reproduce at increased rates.

Typically, Malassezia is entirely normal in your dog's skin. It can only become dangerous once it is transmogrified into a pathogen that begins to grow, invade, and irritate its healthy habitat.

In most cases, yeast infections are more likely to affect dogs whose immune systems have been suppressed or compromised with medications. This often occurs during allergy seasons or when the dog is taking antibiotics of steroids.

Long-term antibiotics tend to diminish the healthy flora in the dog's body, which keeps the yeast under control allowing the fungus to proliferate and cause problems. Also, steroids can decrease the dog's immune system, causing the yeast to increase rapidly.

What Breeds Are Affected by Yeast Infections?

While all dogs may suffer from infections, some breeds are more likely to develop yeast infections. This is due to their body traits and genetics, which include excessive skin folds.

These include, but are not limited to:

Common Symptoms of Yeast Infections in Dogs

How to Choose Dog Foods to Prevent Yeast Infections?

best dog food for yeast infection problems

While yeast infections are somewhat related to environmental triggers and the dog's diet, it is still unclear what exactly causes these problems. Dietary changes, however, have shown a great help to control the infection.

Here are some essential things that you should look for in finding the best dog food for yeast infections.

1. Limited to No Starch

Starch can significantly contribute to yeast-related problems in dogs. Once it breaks in the dog's body, starch turns to sugar, which is where the yeast loves to thrive off.

A large amount of starch in the diet means a significant amount of sugar and a large amount of yeast. Some of the common sources of starch in dog food include potatoes, oatmeal, peas, and rice.

2. Limited Ingredients

Limited ingredient diets can help dogs who are prone to skin problems and allergies. They provide dogs the essentials needed while leaving out any unnecessary additions.

The lesser the ingredients in the dog food, then the lower the chance that your dog may suffer from allergic reactions.

3. Natural Ingredients

Another key to resolve your dog's infection and to prevent their recurrence is to give them foods made from all-natural ingredients.

4. Highly Digestible

Proper digestion aided by digestible carbohydrates, animal-based fats and proteins, and beneficial supplements can significantly help with the prevention of yeast infections in dogs.

5. Healthy Fats

Other than providing energy, healthy fats also help support healthy skin and luscious coats. This will help dogs from recovering from yeast diseases and infections.

6. No Artificial Additives

Artificial additives, preservatives, and fillers can make skin problems even worse. Dog recipes for yeast infections should lack any of these low-quality food additions to ensure better health

How Much Food Should Be Given to Dogs With Infections?

The amount of food that you will feed your dogs will depend on several factors, including age, breed size, and bodyweight.

Small-breed dogs tend to have faster metabolisms, thus requiring three meals per day and a more calorie-dense diet. On the other-hand, large-breed dogs only require two meals per day and higher calorie intake.

Always choose foods dedicated to your dog's breed size and follow the feeding recommendations suggested on the package.

Best Dog Food for Yeast Infections - Conclusion

Dogs that are prone to yeast infections can significantly benefit from a change in their diet. With the various types of dog foods available on the market, always opt for food with limited ingredients, no artificial additives, and low starch content.

With these considerations, the clear winner for the best dog food for yeast infections is Canidae All Life Stages Premium Dry Dog Food.
